The NAASS Beat: July 2022

Posted By Jacob B. Wierson, Wednesday, July 27, 2022
Can you believe it's already July? As our summer sessions zoom by, there are plenty of updates to catch up on within the North American Association of Summer Sessions.

NAASS Year Ends On July 31, 2022

  • In less than a week on July 31, the 2021-2022 NAASS year ends.
  • Renew your institution's NAASS membership today - get instant access to the membership rate at the annual conference, monthly webinars, scholarship in summer/special sessions and more.
  • Renew your 2022-2023 membership here. Unsure if your institution has renewed? Visit our website
  • Contact us for questions about membership renewals.

Register Today for the 2022 Annual Conference

  • Tour the Liberty Bell, see the sites of one of America's most historic cities, and network with colleagues from across North America who work in summer and special sessions at the 2022 Annual Conference in Philadelphia.
  • This year's Annual Conference is three years in the making - and we can't wait to see our members in-person for the first time since 2019.
  • Register today and reserve your hotel here - you won't want to miss this year's annual gathering as we discuss:
    • Lessons from the Pandemic
    • Opportunity Gap
    • Virtual Learning
    • Equity and Inclusion

Pre-Conference New Administrators' Workshop

  • Are you or a colleague a new administrator or newly responsible for any aspect of running a summer/winter/special session program, including overall administration, marketing, curriculum, hiring, communication, and reporting?
  • Join us for our pre-conference New Administrators’ Workshop, Sunday October 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., before the keynote speaker at the Annual Conference.
  • Learn more about how to register when you reserve your spot for Philadelphia.

Reminder - Submit your 2022 NAASS Conference Proposal NOW! Proposal Deadline is Monday, August 15.

  • Click here to start your proposal
  • Anyone attending the annual meeting can prepare an abstract on a topic of their choice for a concurrent session or poster session.
  • Consider submitting a proposal about your work in:
    • Collecting and leveraging data
    • Continued pandemic-related challenges
    • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Marketing
    • Online classes and programs
    • Pre-college
    • Student success initiatives
    • Winter session
  • Concurrent Sessions may be single or group presentations. Each concurrent session is approximately one hour to structure how you like.
  • Put together a panel, lead your peers in an exercise, or opt for a traditional 45 minute presentation with time for questions.
  • For any questions or to discuss ideas, contact Carrie Nordlund at carrie_nordlund@brown.edu or Maeve Skidmore at mskidmor@smu.edu.
  • We also invite members to take part in the Big Ideas poster session.
  • This session is for participants who wish to share creative initiatives and innovative strategies implemented in summer and special sessions in a more informal context.
  • Also about an hour in length, share a project illustrated on a poster with your peers and discuss as they stop by to learn more. View poster sessions from previous years.
  • For questions or to discuss ideas, contact Christopher Pevey Harry at christopher.peveyharry@wisc.edu about the poster session.
  • Submit your program proposal here

Have you Signed Into the NAASS Membership Portal Recently?

  • All current members have access to the NAASS membership portal where hundreds of summer/special session administrators can connect with one another in an instant.
  • Sign in today and comment on threads, answer questions from other members about topics related to summer, and more!
  • Questions about your log in for the portal? Email NAASS Vice President For Membership and Communication, Jacob Wierson, at jacob.wierson@slu.edu.

NAASS Tip of the Month

NAASS is excited to present the 'Tip of the Month', a new element of The NAASS Beat where we can serve members through helpful advice for summer and special session programming. Our goal is to share practical solutions to obstacles you may be experiencing at your institution. If you have a recommendation for the Tip of the Month, contact NAASS

  • This month's Tip of the Month:
    • Trend: Pre-college program participants often contact their parents with questions instead of utilizing the on-campus resources available to them during the program.
    • Recommendation 1: Remind program participants that your department is here to advocate on their behalf.
    • Recommendation 2: Implement systems of communication for parents to contact the appropriate parties for escalated matters.
    • Recommendation 3: Reiterate to students the contact information that can be used for specific situations (ex: contact information for specific departments and program staff).
